The position described involves on-site work at our secondary office space in Boston, MA. Our main offices and factory/lab space are located in East Hartford and South Windsor, CT, respectively. Expect occasional travel to CT (~2 days/month). HyAxiom is committed to growing and supporting efforts associated with hydrogen economy. Work associated with this position will support existing PAFC based technologies and/or focus on exciting, new opportunities related to PEM H2 generation and mobility projects. Job Information

Responsible for the tactical and strategic leadership and support of a group engaged in the selection and maintenance of mechanical components utilized within a fuel cell powerplant. The MBOP group (Mechanical Balance of Plant) is responsible for selecting fuel cell components that meet the requirements generated by the Systems group, which is a separate functional discipline within R&D Engineering. Typical MBOP tasks include corresponding with and effectively collaborating with suppliers to enable selection of optimal hardware, generating component specifications from component level requirement documents, working with suppliers to develop custom components when necessary, generating component- level models, running performance tests (e.g. pump head vs. flow) and/or accelerated durability tests, and conducting component-level testing of new or refurbished parts prior to installation into the powerplant. Critical focus on troubleshooting component noncompliance issues discovered in the factory or in the field. Ongoing focus on employee and career development of others within the discipline. This role has specific concentration on leadership skills and abilities, in conjunction with effective, reliable individual performance contributions.

Role & Responsibility

  • Focus technical skills of MBOP group on hardware selection, custom component determination, component modeling, building component test rigs and running performance tests, and troubleshooting.
  • Direct group’s focus with variance resolution on root cause analysis to generate consistently optimal problem resolution, and ensure lesson’s learned are captured in process revision and standard work. 
  • Provide designated leadership and direction for the planning and the implementation of tactical and strategic MBOP-related work.
  • Possess deep and broad technical understanding of fuel cell principles and mechanical hardware requirements and applications in an industrial environment.
  • Collaborates with Manufacturing and other related disciplines to coordinate and assure effectivity of current and planned MBOP activities.
  • Ensure new componentry has been validated and thoroughly documented prior to production release.
  • Set challenging technical goals for self and the group, and track achievements, success and failures to develop and optimize group performance.
  • Support the development of suppliers to enable them meet technical, cost and delivery targets.
  • Work with supply chain to initiate, develop and execute component-related cost reductions.
  • Stay abreast of all new and evolving, external MBOP-related processes, parts, materials and developments to assure HyAxiom remains elevated above its competition.

Job Requirement

  • BS degree with 6-10+ years of experience
  • MS degree with 4-7+ years of experience
  • PhD degree with 2-4+ years of experience
  • Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or related degree
  • Ability and experience clearly understanding and executing to meet customer requirements
  • Ability and experience working with a diverse group of technical and business focused individuals and groups, occasionally on a global basis.
  • Recognized expert in the field of mechanical componentry.
  • Robust, advanced knowledge of technical componentry parts and process engineering, and the ability to transfer that information to others.
  • Prior employee, team and group leadership experience in a manufacturing/factory environment preferred.
  • Leadership of IPD-type teams.
