Due to expansion, we're looking for an experienced Senior Project Engineer to join our team at Westlakes, Cumbria, working on some of the most challenging and complex nuclear projects in the UK.


As Senior Project Engineer you will:


  • Co-ordinate engineering tasks related to the provision of quality & timely proposals and contract designs that support project delivery and meet the needs of internal stakeholders and our client.
  • Your work will be executed via the management of allotted tasks to quality, time and cost related to a specific project or portfolio of projects.
  • Competence is developed through performing engineering/project co-ordination tasks across multiple engineering disciplines as assigned by a project senior.
  • The role-holder will advise of any design or specification changes that have a significant impact on project deliverables, using existing procedures to solve routine or standard problems.
  • Work can be executed in a specific or narrow field or across a broader range of disciplines, working as part of a project team, though all work is subject to review and approval by a more senior project engineer. 
  • The role holder requires relevant industry experience and a working knowledge of standard principles, theories and practices in a relevant engineering discipline as well as a good working knowledge of project management. They represent a greater theoretical and practical understanding and knowledge than those roles at the level below.

Role & Responsibility


  1. Execution: Use company-wide discipline codes, standards and working practices in order to coordinate the delivery of engineering project tasks in compliance with Business Operating Procedures (BOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs). Provide support as required by more senior project engineers in the provision of quality and timely technical input which will enhance profitable project delivery.


  1. Governance: Comply with national laws/regulations and adhere to company-wide & functional BOPs and WIs in order to act in line with standardised working practices and ensure best practice.


  1. Innovation: Look for opportunities for efficiency savings and development as well as contributing to project reviews/lessons learned in order to promote a culture of continuous improvement.


  1. Communication: Build and maintain an internal and external (client) relationship network in order to leverage expertise, contribute to decision making and satisfy stakeholder requirements.


  1. People Development: Take accountability for their own personal development record as part of Altrad Babcock's talent management ethos. Mentor and provide guidance to more junior members of staff related to technical execution of their roles to support the development of the next level of talent within the organisation.

Job Requirement


  1. BSc/BEng in a discipline appropriate to one or more Engineering, Science or Technical specialisms or equivalent, significant and related professional experience; training qualifying towards professional registration (e.g. CEng) of a recognised professional institution (e.g., IMechE)
  2. Sufficient and appropriate experience in one or more of the core Engineering disciplines
  3. Knowledge and application of Business Operating Procedures appropriate to allotted tasks and associated documentation
  4. Knowledge and application of the requirements of UK/EU (or equivalent in-country) Laws and Regulations applicable to services and products associated with Competency(s)
  5. Experience of owning /managing support processes in a project management environment
  6. Knowledge and understanding of Project Management  theories, methodologies, processes and procedures
  7. Knowledge of Altrad Babcock's operating context and wider industry
